CU Museum of Natural History Tour

Vicky Jahn has been kind enough to arrange a tour of the Natural History Museum at CU's Boulder campus. The guided tour will include talking about and seeing dinosaur bones and tools and bones? of the Archaic period. This is a great opportunity to visit a museum that most of us never even heard about. Please let Vicky know as soon as possible that you want to attend this tour, since she needs to return a headcount to the museum staff in advance.

CU Museum of Natural History Tour

Vicky Jahn has also been kind enough to arrange a tour of CU's Entomology Collection. The Collection contains approximately 550,000 insects and arachnids. It is especially rich in material from the Rocky Mountain Region, but has representation from throughout the United States as well as some material from around the world. This is an excellent supplement to our series of entomology classes. Please let Vicky know that you want to attend as soon as possible, since she also needs to give a headcount for this tour to the museum staff in advance. Picture of Trays of Grasshoppers

12 Short Hikes

Don't we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth? Don't we all spend way too much time working, rushing kids around, running errands and only looking at the view from our windows?  Let's go hike!!  I will be dragging my kids (and myself) around the area, based on trails found in the booklet "12 Short Hikes" by Tracy Salcedo.  For those of us (OK, me) who need to work up slowly to a 4 or 5 mile hike, we will be starting out easy with a mile hike/walk around Evergreen Lake.  Although we may break our necks on the ice (since it's snowing again as I write), let's start the program off around the Spring Equinox (March 21st).  I haven't fixed a day yet for the entire program, as I'd like to hear feedback, but Monday afternoon or Friday (either morning of afternoon) or Sunday (again, either morning or afternoon) look good to start.

Week#1. Evergreen Lake Trail-1 mile (also our backup if weather is miserable)
Week #2. Creek Side Loop (Lair O' the Bear)-1.5 miles
Week #3. Bruin Bluff (Lair O' the Bear)-2 miles
Week #4. Sleepy S Loop (Elk Meadow-2.5 miles
Week #5. Fitness Loop (Bear Creek State Park)-2.5 miles
Week #6. Upper Loop (O'Fallon Park)-2.5 miles
Week #7. Maxwell Falls Trail (Arapahoe Nat. For.)-3 miles
Week #8. Ponderosa/Sisters Loop (Alderfer Park)-3.5 miles
Week #9. Red Rocks Tr (Matthews-Winters Park)-3.5 miles
Week #10. Evergreen Mtn Loop (Alderfer Park)-4 miles
Week #11. Ground Hog Flat (Arapahoe Nat. For.)-4.5 miles
Week #12. Mountain View Loop (Elk Meadows)-4.5 miles
Week #13. Your favorite hike!

Time: If I don't hear back, I'll pick a day/time that suits me!
Place: See description above

Japanese Tea Ceremony

I finally (after three years of trying!) managed to book a Japanese Tea Ceremony at the traditional tea house in the Denver Botanic Gardens.  This ceremony is designed for a public school audience, but they have no problem with a home school group coming in.  This tea ceremony is "the real deal" with the history and culture of Japan literally served up to us in the beautiful little tea house way in the back of the Botanic Gardens.  The ceremony is only done during the month of May and only on Mondays or Tuesdays...so hopefully the one time I nabbed will work for you.  I am allowed a maximum of 30 people and must have one adult for every five children.  There is a minimal cost of $2/child and I think adults may have to pay a regular admission to the Gardens.....but I'm checking on that as I'm not sure. I have eight (8) spots filled and first come, first served.  So e-mail or call to confirm your spot!

Cosmic Collisions

Cosmic Collisions

At first glance, the night sky appears calm and peaceful. But travel beyond your line of vision deep into space and the reality is altogether different. Brilliant planetary impacts and wondrous celestial fireworks are commonplace.
Narrated by Robert Redford, Cosmic Collisions reveals the explosive encounters that shaped our solar system, changed the course of life on Earth, and continue to transform our galaxy and universe today. Images from space and visualizations based on cutting-edge scientific data showcase catastrophic planetary meetings, the merging of massive galaxies, and the continual explosions that occur in the center of the Sun.

Time: Friday the 20th of April at 11:00am. We will probably arrive at the museum around 10am and wander the exhibits for an hour before the show.
Place: DMNS Gates Planetarium
Additional Information: Contact Matt or check the DMNS Gates Planetarium website.
