July & August 2007
With a full schedule of summer camps, vacations and out of town guests, we
don't get too organized during the summer. We have a few outings, an
occasional class and some social gatherings. We've tried to schedule tours
or trips that didn't require reservations or fees up front, but could be dropped
in on as and when you felt up to it. Join us for our last few hikes (or feel
free to suggest a gem you might know about...we found out the Flying J Park has
spectacular wild flowers and a nice mix of woodland and meadow). We
enjoyed the concerts and dancing at the Evergreen Lake House and the fireworks
in Idaho Springs on the Fourth of July. Here's a few fun facts about those
fireworks (to help you remember your chemistry class!):
(U.S. Bureau of Mines, Office of Public Information).
Deep reds = strontium
bright greens = barium
hues of blue = copper
brilliant yellow = sodium
hues of orange = strontium + sodium (OK..that was obvious!)
silvery whites = titanium, zirconium and magnesium alloys
lavender = copper + strontium (another obvious one)
Special effects:
gold sparks = iron filings and small particles of charcoal
loud flash = fine aluminum powder
shower-like effects = small flakes or granules of charcoal and iron filings
silvery-white flashes = magnalium (Magnesium-aluminum alloy)
flash mixtures = aluminum, antimony sulfide and perchlorate
Art at the Lake
|
|
| Enjoy a family art day at the lake. Adults will appreciate the
art on display and children will love the hands-on art processes (clay,
watercolor, beading, etc.) It's free and I, for one, could
use all the help I can get with art. No one will ever mistake any
of my sketches for either beautiful or great art. But I look like
a genius for finding events like this. So join Stefan, Declan,
Duncan and me for a morning at the Lake. An additional day is
scheduled for August 13, same time, same place. |

| Time: Monday the 16th of July at 10:00am to noon |

AM and 2PM. One performance on Saturday (August 11) at 11AM.

you would like to go make reservations for Friday at 11AM (or show up...usually
that's OK). Seating is open and you can seat near us as a group

get involved. We've been to every Dandy Lion production for three
years (maybe four) and have liked them all!! |

Colorado Governor's
Residence Tours
|
|
| Every Tuesday afternoon at 1PM to 3PM the Colorado Historical
Society will give free tours of the Governor's "Mansion". This
offer only extends for June, July and August. So....lets go! I
am in Denver during July 24 and August 14 and would like to tour the
house either of those two dates. I prefer the July 24th time.
However, I'm quite flexible...I just need to go before the tours close
for the season. If enough people are interested I'll call to make sure
the guides can handle us and scout out the logistics. Otherwise,
you just walk right in. There is a pay per park lot across the
street.

|
| Time: Tuesday the 24th of July at 1PM |
|
| Place: 4000 East Eighth Avenue (the big house on the corner!) |

many people have actually visited the Mother Cabrini Shrine site? I've
lived in Evergreen for fifteen years and Colorado all my life and I've
NEVER been up there. What's up there? What's the story?
Can you actually see all of the Denver Basin from up there? Is it
a truly spiritual place for people of all faiths? Let's find out!! |
