The Dinosaur Play

From the moment they enter the theater, children are transported millions and millions of years back into the age of dinosaurs. In front of them is a lone dinosaur egg tapping out a call for help. The children interpret what the egg is saying and help to hatch the egg. They make a pact with a surely Triceratops, protect the newly formed dinosaur family and defeat the dangerous Tyrannosaurus Rex. It's a powerful tale about making friends and forming families.

Chemistry Class

Starting the new year with a substantial science course, this is a long series of chemistry classes with a heavy emphasis on hands-on experimentation. Once some of the basic prerequisites have been covered,  every biweekly class will involve a brief explanatory lecture followed by one or more experiments.

This is a serious chemistry class, folks. As good as or better than a high-school chemistry course. For safety reasons, I must insist on the highest levels of discipline in the classes and the students must be fully committed to this class; 'Homework' and pre- or post-class reading will be assigned for each class.
As usual, I will not set a lower age-limit for this class. If a student is fully committed, I'm glad to have them participate. Having said that, I doubt that anyone under the age of six will really benefit from this course.
Given the safety issues involved here, I must ask for help from student's parents in keeping the younger kids (including my two) amused and away from the equipment.
Safety goggles and any other necessary safely equipment will be issued to students. I can only accommodate a maximum of five or six students in the class, so please contact me soon if you are interested in this course. Bad behavior won't be tolerated, failure to complete home assignments and reading will not be tolerated. I'm sorry to be so strict about these issues, but this course involves a lot of preparation and a big commitment on my part and I insist that I get the same commitment from the students.
The first few classes will lay the foundations for the following experiments and will cover chemistry basics (solid, liquid, gas, element, compound, mixture etc.), atomic structure and the periodic table. Then we will continue to investigate elements and their compounds period by period. The investigation of these elements and compounds will be experiment-intensive. Many of the experiments will be conducted by the students and in the process, they will learn experimental procedure and results reporting procedures. Some of the more dangerous experiments will be conducted as demonstrations with appropriate safety measures employed. The whole course will run until the end of the school year (June or so).
I would like to stress again that this is a serious chemistry course. I don't want to frighten students away who are interested in chemistry, but I do want to make it clear that this is a significant commitment on both our parts. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns.

DMNS Children's Workshops

Shannon Mahan intends to sign one of her sons up for one of the following workshops at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science;

Dandy Dinosaurs (ages 4 & 5)
The dinosaurs are back! Experience the world of sauropods and carnosaurs. Try using “belly buster” gizzard stones to grind plants. Touch a fossil cast of a T.rex tooth. Learn about our state fossil, Stegosaurus, and role-play the life of a dinosaur.
Saturday, February 10th, 1:00–3:00 pm.
$20 member, $25 nonmenber.

Paws and Jaws (ages 4 & 5)
Examine and touch many different animal faces and feet, from a wolf nose and turtle toes to a horse jaw and bear paw! How are they different? How are they the same? Why do they look the way they do? Compare your foot to an elephant’s and your teeth to a tiger’s! Create a fanciful animal mask to take home.
Saturday, March 3rd, 10:00am–Noon.
$20 member, $25 nonmenber.

If anyone is interested in one of these workshops, Shannon is willing to provide transportation there and back. Just enroll your kid(s) and arrange an appropriate place for pickup and drop-off with Shannon. What could be easier?

Cosmic Collisions

Cosmic Collisions

Opening February 2nd at the DMNS Planetarium.

At first glance, the night sky appears calm and peaceful. But travel beyond your line of vision deep into space and the reality is altogether different. Brilliant planetary impacts and wondrous celestial fireworks are commonplace.
Narrated by Robert Redford, Cosmic Collisions reveals the explosive encounters that shaped our solar system, changed the course of life on Earth, and continue to transform our galaxy and universe today. Images from space and visualizations based on cutting-edge scientific data showcase catastrophic planetary meetings, the merging of massive galaxies, and the continual explosions that occur in the center of the Sun.

Time: As soon as show times are announced.
