Mt. Goliath Wildflower Hike (Mt. Evans Side)

(posted in advance due to popularity of the hike.  please sign up ASAP)

On this early morning hike on the flanks of Mt Evans, we will discover the life cycles and lore of the alpine tundra. A guide from the Denver Botanical Gardens will take us along the 1.5 mile Mount Goliath M. Walter Pesman Trail, as it winds through subalpine and alpine areas where ‘wildflowers and animals live amid grand mountain vistas and the grizzled beauty of the bristlecone pines’. All ages welcome.  One of the oldest known bristlecone pines in Colorado (more than 1,500 years old) is found here. The gnarled and twisted pines on windswept granite ridges represent the northernmost occurrence of bristlecone in Colorado.
Cost is free. Please call Lucy Bauer (303-816-9112) as soon as possible if you’d like to come, as these hikes are very popular and only available for a few weeks in the summer.

Time: Tuesday the 22nd of July at 8:45 am
Place: Meet at Echo Lake (up Hwy 103)
Additional Information: Contact Lucy or Lisa (http://www.botanicgardens.org/content/our-gardens-mount-goliath

Evergreen Nature Center (at the Lake)

The Evergreen Nature Center (located in the old warming house at Evergreen Lake) will open to the public for a sneak peak at the Earth Day Celebration on April 19. This cozy, charming structure will host exhibits on local birds and their migration patterns, the Bear Creek Watershed, information about the mammals that we live with in our environment, and the aquatic life in Evergreen Lake.

That’s just for starters! Members of the nature center planning committee are working to develop interesting programs, a varied assortment of exhibits, and volunteer staffing opportunities. The search for an executive director is also underway. This paid position will be responsible for the daily activities in the center, and will work with our committees to continue development of the center into a wonderful resource for local Evergreen residents and our many visitors to the park. The Evergreen Nature Center is a project of Evergreen Audubon in cooperation with Evergreen Park and Recreation Department.

EPRD will continue to use part of the building for boat rentals in the summer, and may host other functions there as well. We have worked out a plan that should satisfy both organizations. It has been a longtime dream of TENAS to have a nature center; that dream is now coming into fruition.  The hut is staffed from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Sunday April to October.  Not sure about the other times...I'm guessing it's not open when it is not staffed.  Stop by for a look, it might make a worthwhile field-trip or it might just be nice to discover on your own.

The Gnome Experience (DMNS)

There are small hidden gnomes--painted into the diorama murals at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.  There may be as many as 6 or 7 all around the museum.  Vicky has only found one in the dinosaur section.  The library at the museum has a pamphlet on the background and where they are.  You probably haven't heard much about the gnomes, but Vicky will be going to the Museum for the express purpose of finding them all.  Join her if this sounds fun to you!!  The Library there does have a hand-out on the dioramas and where to find the gnomes.
Time: Friday the 30th of May at 1:00 pm
Place: Meet at DMNS (next to Gift Shop)
Additional Information: Contact Vicky or just show up
